Una prossimità rinnovata all’origine.

Aldo Rossi acknowledged this with disarming candor in his Quaderni Azzurri (23, 1979): «Sure, now everything feels already seen to me.»

The thirteenth issue of GUD takes this confession seriously, probing the fertile yet unstable terrain between copy and invention, genealogies and ruptures, overwhelming masters and the desire to leave a mark. For, as Nelson Goodman reminded us in 1978, «making is a remaking»: every act of design emerges already within a landscape of forms, images, and memories.

The very idea of originality is a modern invention, a recent myth that produced tabulae rasae, avant-gardes, rejections of fathers, and cults of authorship. More decisively, it generated a distinctly modern neurosis: the compulsion to be original, to inaugurate a new beginning each time. Such anxiety rests on a scientistic logic unknown to antiquity, for the “new” was once understood as variation rather than origin.

Today, however, that myth is crumbling.

Not only because of digital saturation, but because we have come to see that the original does not necessarily coincide with the new. Originality is not a leap forward; it is a return—a renewed proximity to the origin. It is an approach rather than a break, an intensification rather than an invention.

Hans-Georg Gadamer (1960) dislodges the “new” from the rhetoric of beginnings. As he observes: «But we do not understand what recognition is in its profoundest nature if we only regard it as knowing something again that we know already […]. The joy of recognition is rather the joy of knowing more than is already familiar. In recognition what we know emerges, as if illuminated […].» The original, then, does not inaugurate; it casts new light on what already exists.

Anamnesis (ἀνάμνησις) does not frame novelty as rupture but as the re-emergence of the known under a new light. It does not celebrate an absolute beginning; it probes genealogies, memories, and the enduring life of forms and types.

Gadamer understands anamnesis as a process of “desedimentation”: a critical reactivation of the roots of our thought, freeing them from the opacity accumulated over time. Anamnesis means acknowledging that we never begin from zero—and that no tabula rasa is possible. To understand, then, is to set our conceptual traditions back into motion, to reanimate what we had assumed as sedimented.

For Plato, by contrast, anamnesis is reminiscence: knowledge not as invention ex nihilo, but the surfacing of what the soul already holds. Truth is neither created nor invented; it is remembered. It is a return, never a beginning. In architecture, this means recognizing that every project arises within a web of forms, types, and memories.

Michel Serres (1967) shows that the history of knowledge does not advance through continuity, but through leaps, omissions, and reactivations: anamnesis is the gesture that reassembles what appears disconnected, retroactively producing the past rather than merely retrieving it. Every form has at least three ages: an origin, a reactivation that alters its meaning, and a recursive judgment determining what, within that concept, was essential. Knowledge, then, does not accumulate—it filters: it sediments, suspends, diverts, forgets, and reactivates, whenever a new language enables it to translate, remap, or re-signify forms that once seemed incompatible.

As in the night sky, where the staggered times of celestial bodies coexist in a single view, anamnesis is the point of contact between heterogeneous temporalities, a productive interference between the present and the distant past. A similar movement, George Didi-Huberman (2000) argues, traverses images. Even in the most ancient of them, he notes, «the present never ceases to reshape,» for the image holds «more memory and more future than the being who contemplates it».

Against the background that, from Plato to Gadamer, defines the logic of rediscovery—and that contemporary thought has reframed in more intricate ways—lies the humanistic tradition of inventio, by which for centuries the “new” was understood not as pure creation but as finding, recognizing, selecting, and combining of what already exists and is known. The Greeks called this héuresis (εὕρησις): not the modern discovery, but the unearthing of a buried material. Cicero, in De inventione, states without hesitation that inventio is «quae princeps est omnium partium,» the first and highest of all the parts of rhetorical art.

Modernity has forgotten this century-long bridge, turning what earlier cultures experienced without contradiction into neurosis: originality as a resurfacing rather than an auroral event.

In architecture, more than elsewhere, the original is not the “never seen” but what can reactivate, transform, and reinterpret tradition. What we call “new” is often the capacity to draw back into meaningful visibility what had been forgotten; to rekindle the memory of forms, types, uses, and ideas, rather than dismiss them.

Today, what is genuinely new does not erase memory; it propels it forward without nostalgia.

What does it mean, today, to be original?

For architects, this has always been a decisive question. No project is born ex nihilo—nor has any ever been.

Architecture schools reveal a persistent and contradictory tension: young designers pursue a gesture of their own, a mark that sets them apart from conformity; in design, as in society, as individuals even before they are architects. And yet every “beginning” carries an unavoidable inheritance. How, then, can the trap of the “new at any cost” be avoided?

The original is not what is born; it is what survives—what endures, adapts, returns. Aby Warburg sensed this in the persistence of forms; Charles Darwin framed it in terms of selection. What, then, truly survives? The singular gesture, or the forms capable of generating lineages, variants, mutations?

«Your eyes can deceive you. Yet every act of looking is a déjà-vu, a stratification of memories, precedents, and sedimented images. Architectural history is nothing more than the architect’s toolbox, the space where figures and ideas are formed and layered. Within this toolbox lies the canon: a shared heritage, the foundation of a collective artistic and professional identity, a corpus of relatively reliable and recurrent exempla to which one turns in deciding whether an object should be admitted into that noble, and endlessly contested, category we call Architecture.
